European School Rugby Team Competes in Heidelberg
The day started early ....it was still dark and the cold, damp wind chilled the bones! There was snow in the air! Nevertheless, our 11 young warriors 9 kids from the European School and 2 additional players from a local german school jumped cheerily into the convoy of cars and we set off north to Heidelberg. Just time for a quick change, tie boots, plug in mouth guards and we were off into the first game.
Game 1: Neckergemünd was a big team with a couple of large “battering rams” upfront. Within a few minutes, these lethal weapons had flattened the unfortunate Jorit to score and the same had administered a crushing blow on Achut that required a visit to the x-ray ward at the local hospital! 2 tries down, ESK fought back strongly with the excellent Sagnik scoring in the corner. Despite a lot of pressure, time ran out before ESK could tie the scores. Nicolas, Sagnik, Jorit, Tugana, James, Achuth, Nikkila, Dimitri Jessica, Alex, Elijah
Game 2 meant a meeting with an even bigger team from Buehl. Despite their size, the ESK team tackled tenaciously, with tough tackling from Tugana, Nikkila, James, and the purple haired Elijah, setting up Sagnik and Jessica to score – but were stopped by a some solid Buehl rearguard action. A couple of loose balls were picked up and converted by Buehl who ran out winners by 2 tries to 0. But this was a stunning effort by ESK.
Game 3
ESK had been a little unlucky with the start, but were gaining in confidence! The next team up was Calw. A high quality game with 2 well matched teams. ESK applied immediate pressure, driving towards the Calw line. A loose ball was picked up by James, who passed down the line until the excellent Jessica ran through 3 tackles to score in the corner. Calw came back well with a well conceived try of their own. In this topsy-turvy game, ESK re-took the lead when good tackling by the ESK pack led to Sagnik picking up the ball to run the length of the pitch to score. Again Calw drove back ESK to find an equalizing try, which they did, seconds from the final whistle. An excellent game and a well deserved draw.
Game 4
The ever improving ESK were up and ready for the final game against a very strong Darmstadt side, who were joint leaders of the tournament. The determination was etched onto the team’s faces. With confidence, ESK drove their opponents back towards their own line. Great team tackling from Alexander, Nicholas (“Big Guy”) and Dimitry smothered Darmstadt’s attempts to break out. With this constant pressure came mistakes and these were brilliantly converted by Jessica (2) and Sagnik (1). Darmstadt ran in a try at the end of the game, but ESK ran out worthy winners 3 tries to 1. The win also meant free pizza promised by the coach for any win during the tournament In all, ESK competed very well and got stronger as the tournament progressed. The result was a very credible 4th place and a first trophy. The tournament was an important learning experience for this new ESK team: The team demonstrated a lot of potential…..but most of all, a lot of fun was had by all!
